The captivating Canary Islands are an autonomous region of Spain. The archipelago is located 100 kilometres to the west of Morocco. Most of the islands were formed by ancient volcanic activity providing them with lush forests, otherworldly landscapes and beaches of red and black sands.

When you holiday to the Canary Islands you’ll find diverse discoveries at every destination. From the cool black sands of Fuerteventura, to the hip café lined boulevards of Tenerife; the National Parks of La Palma, and the verdant ‘valley of a thousand palms’ in Lanzarote – each day can offer a different experience.

The Canary Islands are awash with wonderful things to see and do. Here’s a suggestion of what you might enjoy: you can hike Tenerife’s rugged Anaga Mountains, explore a volcanic vineyard in Lanzarote, and gaze up in wonder in La Palma at one of the clearest night skies in Europe. This region offers so much more than sunshine and siestas, nevertheless the Canarian blue skies and golden beaches prove hugely irresistible too.

Pack as you would a regular summer holiday wardrobe; t-shirts, shorts, dresses, sunhats and sunglasses, flip-flops and water shoes. During the winter months the weather is still warm, but light layers and a light jacket would be a sensible addition. As the Canary Islands are hotspots for outdoor pursuits, a comfy pair of walking shoes is recommended too.

The climate is very pleasant, with an average of 19ºC in the winter and 23ºC in the summer – ideal for soaking up all of the glorious sights. 

Visas aren’t required for the Canary Islands on stays shorter than 90 days. However you’ll need to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the period of stay. The Canary Islands are in the same time zone as the UK, which means you can relax knowing you’ve no need to reset watches (or your body clock!).

When visiting the Canary Islands from Southampton, Euros (EUR) will be the main currency used.

The Canary Islands are made up of seven (lucky for some, certainly if you visit!) main islands in the Atlantic Ocean: Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. (There are also several smaller islands and islets of the Canary Islands too.) 

If you fancy learning a bit of the lingo before your holiday swat up on Spanish - and if you want extra brownie points, it’s specifically the Canarian Spanish dialect.
