Its northernmost region, Tromsø, is known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’ and is a prime location for witnessing this natural phenomenon. Plus, what’s better than viewing them from the deck of one of our amazing ships? <p>Known as the Arctic playground, explore the vibrant city of <a href="https://www.pocruises.com/ports/tromso-norway">Tromsø</a> that’s surrounded by wilderness. By day, take the Tromsø Cable Car, called ‘Fjellheisen’ in Norwegian, for an amazing view of the city and beautiful surrounding area and fjords. In the town itself, visit the stunning Arctic Cathedral, or ‘Ishavskatedralen’ in Norwegian, which is built to look like an iceberg using stunning glass mosaics. There’s also the Polaria Arctic experience centre and aquarium where you can learn all about the Arctic and its nature and wildlife. By night, make the most of the local knowledge and go on the hunt for the spellbinding Northern Lights. Your experienced guides will take you out into the wilderness to the spots where you’re most likely to find the dazzling aurora borealis. Along the way, your guides will explain why the lights occur and you’ll stop to enjoy hot chocolate and cookies as you gaze into the expansive sky.<br>

<p>Slightly further south in Narvik, experience a different way of chasing the magical Northern Lights. Travel by train on the Ofoten railway through the rugged mountainous terrain from Narvik to the Swedish border. Stopping in the small village of Abisko in Sweden, you’ll spend some time scouring the night sky, hoping to see the green magical display that is the Northern Lights. You’ll also make another stop in Bjørnfjell to spot the faint wisps of colour or dancing, shimmering curtains of light over the area.&nbsp;</p>

Blue-greens are the least common colours, and can only be seen during the most intensive solar storms.</p>
