As you sail through the stunning Eyjafjörður, keep your eyes peeled for Hrísey, an island famed for its beautiful bird population. Watch out for the magnificent flights of more than 40 species and the colourful beaks of puffins diving into the waters below for their afternoon snack. This birdwatcher’s paradise has been inhabited since early settlements began and makes for a fascinating history lesson about Icelandic culture. Today, Hrísey is a traditional fishing village and is filled with old Nordic red-roofed architecture and sweeping farms. Look out for the red and blue tractors lined up along the rocky shoreline, waiting to take visiting ferry passengers on quirky tours of the small island.
