This picture-postcard place with its brightly painted houses and surrounding hills captivates all visitors, even those unfamiliar with the children's TV programme Balamory - which was filmed here. Built as a fishing port in the late 18th century, it's home to Mull's only whisky distillery, so do pop in for a wee dram. One of Britain's finest destinations for wildlife-watchers, its rare birds and animals include Golden and White-tailed Eagles, Otters and Red Deer. It's also said to be the site of a wrecked galleon of the scattered Spanish Armada, which reputedly went to Davy Jones' Locker laden with millions of gold coins.
