Life in a Danish Manor
Aarhus, Denmark
moderate
4:30 Hours
From the moment you cross the double moat that surrounds this dazzling building, which stretches back to 1490, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. As you walk through the rooms, immaculately decorated with period furniture, tapestries and porcelain, you’ll follow the development of Danish nobility throughout the ages.
Then you’ll have a chance to head ‘downstairs’ to the Servants’ Hall, where you’ll be served a traditional Danish pastry, with tea and coffee. Next door you’ll find the Manor Kitchen, the beating heart of the building, from where heat and the smell of home baking would rise up through the manor.
Heading out into the well-manicured grounds, you’ll find the Green Museum, an agricultural exhibition celebrating the history of people living in the countryside. There are hunting and agriculture displays, as well as live farm animals and cultivated crops. And as you stroll through the agricultural botanical garden, you’ll see old varieties of Danish fruit, vegetables and herbs.
