Take a scenic journey to the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, a truly impressive fortress built by the colonial Spaniards to protect Cartagena from pirates.
The fort dates back to the 1600s but later enlargement in 1762 covered the entire hill. In the heart of colourful Old Cartagena explore further historic sites, such as Las Bóvedas, the city's old dungeons that now house boutiques and craft shops.
At the Church of San Pedro Claver, the saint's body is on show in a glass coffin on the high altar. At the Naval Museum, enjoy a folkloric performance followed by pottering in the Old City.
