Soak up the stunning views of Funchal from a cable car, and ride a traditional wicker toboggan.
Your picturesque cable car ride up to Monte takes about 15 minutes. (Similar to a ski lift, the car does not stop, it just slows as you walk on.) After boarding your two-seat wicker toboggan, you’ll begin your thrilling 10-minute descent through the steep, narrow lanes. Your ‘drivers’, traditionally dressed in white with a straw hat, will run alongside your toboggan, pushing and steering you, and using their rubber-soled boots as brakes.
Your coach will take you to Pico Dos Barcelos, 1,165 above sea level, for splendid panoramic views over Funchal and the bay. Afterwards, at a wine lodge in Funchal, you’ll taste a selection of Madeira wines, ranging from the dry Sercial to sweet Malmsey.
