At the National Monument, a 450-foot-tall marble obelisk topped with a gold flame, you can learn about Indonesia’s fight for freedom, before strolling through the country’s prehistoric past and thriving present, in the nearby Indonesian National History Museum.
You’ll get a glimpse into the Dutch colonial period at Fatailah Square, home to a number of well-preserved buildings and once the heart of the colonial administration in the 18th century. Explore Jakarta History Museum, also known as the Fatahilah Museum or Batavia Museum, where there is a specific section in the museum dedicated to showcasing the renowned Indonesian art of shadow puppetry.
Then you can enjoy another time-honoured tradition at the Sarinah Shopping Mall – shopping. You’ll have plenty of free time to browse for fashions, cosmetics, perfumes, souvenirs, handicrafts and textiles; including batiks and the traditional woven cloth known as ikat.
