After crossing Fornelos Hanging Bridge over the Eume River, a trek of approximately 1.3 miles (1½hrs) is waiting for you to explore the largest coastal Atlantic forest in Europe, Fragas do Eume Nature Park. Home to many endangered species of flora and fauna, the forest also echoes a unique history, particularly strengthened during Medieval times.

Following along the trail of the Eume River, you will be in the midst of Galicia’s Fragas, mixed woodland mainly of oak, alders, birch, ferns and ash trees. This vegetation creates the ideal habitat for an enormous variety of woodland animals.

Take a moment to capture on camera one of the many waterfalls that you will encounter along the densely forested mountain slope.

At the end of the trail, you will reach Caaveiro Monastery, a real architect’s jewel. Rescued from the 9th Century, it stands at the heart of the Nature Park and displays the marks of the several transformations undertaken over the centuries.

A well deserved stop will be made at Taverna de Caaveiro, where you can quench your thirst with a refreshing soft drink, coffee or tea, accompanied by a local Spanish omelette, olives, biscuits and cake.
