Manaus is a city of contrasts, a sprawling metropolis in the middle of the world's largest rainforest. A scenic drive takes you through the historic and modern areas of the capital to the Teatro Amazonas.
This magnificent opera house opened in 1897 at the height of the rubber boom and no expense was spared in its construction, – with British steel, marble from Italy and 36,000 ceramic tiles from France.
Visit the Indian Museum for an insight into the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, and the historic Municipal Market, where you’ll find an incredible selection of fruit, herbs, powders and medicinal extracts.
