A few miles outside Manaus is the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Rio Solimões. The Negro is the colour of black tea while the Solimoes is a pale sandy-coloured river, and the two flow side by side but don’t mix – a truly memorable sight.
Explore Lake January, its surface covered with giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, named in honour of Queen Victoria. Transfer to motorised canoes to journey deeper into the narrow tributaries.
