South Island Sights and Algar do Carvão
Praia Da Vitoria, Portugal
high
3:00 Hours
Sit back and enjoy a scenic drive towards Algar do Carvão, one of the island’s geological nature reserves. The name ‘Algar do Carvão’, meaning coal pit, refers to the walls of the cave which are formed from dark black lava. Upon arrival, you’ll descend the steps down the volcanic chimney into the cavern. Admire the stalagmites and stalactites and the crystal clear lake at the bottom.
After your visit to Algar do Carvão, you’ll take a drive to view the Guilherme Moniz Cauldron, the largest volcanic crater in the archipelago. It’s then onto the Serra do Cume viewpoint, where you can enjoy some of the beautiful landscapes of the Azores, before the scenic return drive to Praia da Vitória.
