Your visit of the Eternal City will start outside the walls of the Papal Basilica of St Paul’s, which is one of Rome's 4 ancient PapalBasilicas. The Basilica was built over the burial place of St Paul, and inside you can admire the portraits of the pope’s reign during the time of St Peter through to Pope Francesco.
Follow your guide to the 2nd Basilica, the Papal Arch Basilica of St John in the Lateran (the Cathedral of Rome). It’s the oldest church in the west and here, you can admire the Twelve Statues of the Apostles’ and the largest standing obelisk in the world. You’ll also see the famous “Scala Santa”, the stairs of the passion of Christ.
You’ll then continue to the 3rd Papal Basilica, the Basilica of St Mary Major. With its famous mosaics, it depicts scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, Christ and scenes from the Old Testament.
Afterwards, you’ll stop at St Peter’s Square, where you can admire St Peter’s Basilica, the largest Christian church in the world. Here, you will have some free time for lunch, to browse the souvenir shops or time permitting an interior visit of St Peter’s Basilica.
At the end of the day, you will be escorted back to your coach for the return journey to Civitavecchia
