Guided Walk of Historic Taranto
Taranto
moderate
3:30 Hours
Discover the ‘Town of Two Seas’ on a captivating walk through the history-laden streets of Taranto.
Following your informative guide into the head-turning city centre, you’ll start at Piazza Castello. Here you’ll find the remains of the Temple of Poseidon, which dates back to the 6th century BC. You’ll stop at the Gothic Church of San Domenico, and see the magnificent Baroque and Romanesque styles of the San Cataldo Cathedral.
You’ll also visit the imposing Castello Aragonese – a huge 15th-century waterside fortress.
Just next to the castle, you’ll have the chance to walk across the iconic swing bridge – Ponte Girevole. This symbol of Taranto was built in 1887 and connects the island of Borgo Antico with the peninsula of Borgo Nuovo. It stretches approximately 90 meters over the large navigable canal that unites the two seas: the Mar Grande and the Mar Piccolo.
Afterwards, you’ll have some free time to explore the city under your own steam.
