Take an atmospheric walk through the beautiful architectural treasures of Lecce and discover the Florence of South Italy.
Nestled in the heel of Italy’s boot, you’ll find lovely Lecce, a town that dates back to Roman times. As you follow your informative guide through the twisting lanes, lined with local golden limestone, you’ll discover the Leccese Baroque architectural style.
The entire city of Lecce is like an open-air museum, embellished with Rococo and Baroque monuments. The city flourished from the 16th – 18th centuries, and the local fine-grained limestone was perfect for creating delicate and decorative relief.
You’ll visit the sumptuous Baroque Santa Croce Basilica, and see the impressive façade of the Governor’s Palace, a onetime monastery for Celestine monks. You’ll also visit one of the most impressive squares in southern Italy, Piazza Duomo, and wonder at the 2nd-century Roman amphitheatre, which once held 20,000 spectators.
Afterwards, you’ll have some free time to explore on your own and browse the artisan workshops, or sample a delicious ‘pasticciotto’ filled pastry.
