Follow your informative guide on a fascinating wander around the caves, crypts and troglodytic dwellings of ancient Massafra.
When you arrive at Massafra, which is perched atop a bluff of gentle hills, you’ll find the town is cut into two by the dramatic San Marco ravine. There are several bridges that join the town together, which also create spectacular panoramas. But the town’s true treasures lie deep within this mysterious gorge.
The ravine is filled with caves, crypts and homes, hewn from the surrounding soft limestone that date back to Neolithic times. You’ll see the hidden village of Santa Marina, the rock church of St Abate, and more. There are numerous other hermitages and rock-carved churches that boast amazingly detailed frescoes.
After your guided walk, you’ll have some free time to stroll around the town and explore on your own. Some of the highlights include the Baroque Saint Agostino Church, the 17th-century Baroque Convent of Saint Benedict and the imposing Massafra Castle.
