Visby Introduction
Visby, Sweden
moderate
2:00 Hours
Enjoy a leisurely ride around the ancient walled city of Visby, with photo stops and short, scenic walks.
Exploring this outstanding Hanseatic town and UNESCO site, you’ll visit the former medieval harbour, Almedalen. Today it’s a relaxing park with great views of the medieval walls, houses, and church ruins. From there you’ll walk towards Visby´s oldest building, the 11th-century Powder Tower, and continue through Fisherman’s Gate, past the Botanical Gardens.
Riding along the outside of the wall, which stretches for 3.5 km around the town, you’ll arrive in Galgberget, just north of Visby. The lofty cliffs of this nature reserve offer beautiful views of Visby and the sea. At the edge of the cliff, you’ll find the remains of the town’s 13th-century gallows – Europe’s only preserved, medieval execution site.
Back in Visby, you’ll walk across a bridge over the dry moat and pass through Dalmans Gate. Strolling through picturesque, twisting alleyways, you’ll arrive at an outstanding viewpoint right above the 11th-century St Mary’s Cathedral, for stunning views over the terracotta rooftops, with a sparkling sea backdrop.
